Papers of Samuel Pannill Wilson, 1847-1938 (bulk 1860-1899).

Letters, indentures, accounts, receipts, promissory notes, tax receipts. Financial and legal papers of Wilson detail transactions in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Va., and neighboring counties in Virginia and North Carolina as well as Martinsville and Richmond. Many concern tobacco, grist mill accounts, railroad shipments, and the hiring of laborers. Of interest are accounts, 1858 and 1862, for medical treatment of slaves, receipts for slaves impressed to work on Confederate fortifications, a list of wages paid to sharecroppers, 1867, and a Freedman's Bureau apprenticeship indenture. Also of interest are receipts for Confederate taxes, accounts and receipts for the building of a home, 1860-62; an 1880 right of way agreement for the North Carolina Broad Gage Railroad; an account, 1880, of damages from the construction of the Danville and New River Railroad; a bank agreement not to execute a judgement against Wilson, 1878; expenses for Ruth Wilson at Roanoke Female College, a survey of a house tract; and a receipt, n.d., for the barter of corn for a suit of clothes.
